Fair warning, this is a reprint of an article the kind people at Street Speech published. More fair warning, if you are looking for my normal foolishness, you might want to take a pass, this is depressing stuff. If you are feeling a little too cheerful for a Monday, by all means, continue.
What happens when the system fails? How do you describe the worst possible outcome of the atrophy of a dream? It is easy to picture a catastrophic collapse, one final attempt as the circle fails to come around, a horrible vision where all of the moving parts slow before stopping completely. At least there is the almost romantic vision of a shared disaster. But, it doesn’t happen that way. It is a thousand small failures, the system sustains itself. But, it leaves parts behind, people who can’t find a fit. It leaves them homeless, living on the street, forgotten by almost everybody.
Of course, it is easy to overlook the failure when it is so third person, so distant. When you add a hint of mental illness, and possibly addiction all of the sudden it is almost predestined. Wash your hands, walk away, thinking there was nothing that could be done. However, there are no villains in this story. Only the unfortunate few who have suffered so much.
According to Greendoors.org (an organization striving to provide homes for those in need) 643,067 people are homeless in America on an average day. A horrifying number. Greater than the population of Wyoming. An epidemic that has swept across the country. It is not limited to metropolitan centers, rural areas, suburbs, all face the same crisis.
Breaking down the numbers, a bit further, Greendoors.org states 238,110 of these homeless people are in families. Children, without a home. According to the National Center on Family Homelessness, 2.5 million children are homeless every year. The most fragile component of our society, without a roof over their heads. Again, according to National Center on Family Homelessness, there are homeless children in every state, county, and city in our country.
Even if the people can enroll a child in school, no mean accomplishment, true education requires the building of a relationship between students and teachers. Students require a level of comfort with their classmates. A classroom requires a nurturing environment, a sense of trust, of continuity, long term relationships, only possible through stable family housing.
According to the Urban Institute family stress and instability can have deep and lasting impacts on children’s physical, emotional, and cognitive development. These children are being put through a meat grinder from which they may never recover. And if they do think of the scars left by nights of being cold, hungry, and afraid.
Personally, I have seen a small family, mother, father, son, gathering up their belongings, the chill of the morning causing their breath to steam white, as they shake the frost from their meager collection of blankets, and bags, packing up and moving along while they can still pretend it is a choice. Knowing full well that soon it will not be voluntary. And I thought, how can this happen? But, these people often have no choice. Recent studies indicate that nowhere in the US can a person working forty hours at a minimum wage job afford a single bedroom apartment at fair market rent.
In many cases, mental illness drags people into the tight grip of helpless despair. Greendoors.org estimates that 25% of homelessness is caused by this scourge. Living on the street is the only option for people with those demons. According to NationalHomeless.org mental illness denies people the ability to form lasting relationships, forces them to misinterpret guidance, and push away caregivers. Unable to care for themselves, or maintain a home they are left with only one option, the street. The street never turns anybody away.
It is an awful sight, on my daily strolls through downtown, watching a poor man digging cigarette butts out of public ashtrays. Smoking is bad, but this is worse. It is the only time I wished I hadn’t quit smoking, so I could give this poor man a cigarette.
The foundation of humanity is built on the love of fellow man, and the cracks and crumbling are obvious when you see these poor lost souls wandering alone in such terrible darkness in the glaring light of day. Even if these people were given homes they would not be able to master the basic skills needed to sustain even the most basic of homes without help through improved mental health care for the poor.
Domestic violence often drives victims to a life on the streets. According to the National Need to End Domestic Violence up to 57% of all homeless women report that domestic violence is the immediate cause of their homelessness. Moreover, 38% of all victims of domestic violence become homeless at some point in their life. Victims are forced to choose between the certain violence at home and the potential violence of the lonely life scrounging for change for on the sidewalks.
Evicted because of disturbances that left them battered and in no small way broken, they are left with no money, no home, and no hope. Going from bad to bad, life as a constant, an equation of agony with no solution.
Sometimes they are only children, late teens, early twenties. Sitting, legs crossed, a little sign laid across their knees plaintively asking for anything, any small donation. Sometimes you can see the bruises, sometimes you can’t, but you know they are there. Bruises that go beyond the motley, dark purple, green, and yellow blue. Bruises that will never heal, that you will never see, painful, permanent tattoos of betrayal.
I walk the streets, and I see. It is almost like walking through parallel dimensions on my lunch break. In one dimension are the people carrying purses, brief cases, carrying bags of hot carry out food, talking about a trip to Put-In-Bay, oil changes, the need for an effective method to combat crabgrass. All normal, routine, samples cut from the fabric of American life. On the B side are the lonely, the forgotten, carrying ratty back packs, wearing stocking caps, and jackets. There is something about sleeping on concrete, or asphalt, it drains the warmth from a person and never returns, not completely. When you look in their eyes you see the sorrow, the pain, suffering, the simple statement, “you could never imagine how tired I am.”
You can’t just walk away from a look like that. You carry it with you as you rush away to the safety of life. But you never really walk away at all. It goes with you. If you can’t take pity on these poor souls, these lost, lonely wraiths you have never really looked into their eyes at all.
Life goes on without slowing, but, there is hope, it will take everybody, our elected officials, our communities, our churches. It won’t be easy, but what choice do we have?

Homelessness, an epidemic.

A Chance for Immortality.
If you look hard enough you can see the point where the past and the future collide. It is called the present. Since it passes so quickly it is almost impossible to notice. One infinitesimal flash and it is gone. You really have to be on your toes.
What is the point of finding that one time/place/instance where time meets? It is the heart of the universe. Finding that definable instant is the key. Time travel, space travel, unlocking the secrets of matter, creation, the past, the future, all lie just on the other side.
Obviously the company that can find it will be wealthy, powerful, popular and extremely sought after for late night talk shows, and scholarly journals, maybe even the cover of People Magazine.
We, here at Life Explained, feel we have the best chance of finding that opportunity. Let's face it, our competitors don't even know it exists. They can eat our cosmic, light speed traveling dust, if you catch our drift.
It is expensive though. Extremely expensive. Today's best technology is too primitive, too slow, we need to build our own Ultra High Speed Cameras, and the Worlds Fastest Dual Processor Monster Computers. We need scanners that scan in ways never imagined, we need particle accelerators that accelerate smaller particles faster than anybody ever dreamed, we need a new espresso machine (the last one was demolished in the territorial wars between accounting and legal, covered in next weeks post, "Lessons Learned the Hard Way"). We need things we don't even know we need yet.
We need you, to send us money, as much as you can, and as often as possible. For the person who donates the most we will go back in time and add their face to Mount Rushmore. You want to talk about a great way to impress the in-laws, here it is.
"So, Bob, what do you do for a living?"
"I deliver beer, and my face is on Mount Rushmore."
"Wow, that's cool!"
We take most major credit cards, cash, and bearer bonds of any type, bit coin, and pay pal.
Thank you, we are forever in your debt, not that we intend to pay you back, that is just being polite.

Announcing his candidacy, Dr. Dawg.
We are on the eve of the Presidential Primaries. Donald Trump is the latest to join the fray. With a big, splashy announcement, using Neil Young music, the theme from the Phantom of the Opera, and an escalator, he jumped into the middle of the fight in a way only a seasoned reality television "actor" can. Who will be next, and how will they top that, the anticipation is almost lethal.
We, here at Life Explained, would like to see more people follow Mr. Trump's lead. It seems to us that substance has long been abandoned, and flair, and drama are the new trump card (please forgive the pun, it was too easy to resist).
Campaign managers should be replaced by directors, and speech writers should be supplemented with special effects studios. We realize that we are not going to glean any useful information from any serious candidate, who is too worried about offending anyone to speak truthfully. If we can't have information, and facts we may as well have some entertainment.
It would solve a lot of problem. Voter apathy and low turnouts at the polling place would be replaced with swarming, mobbing, adoring fans, willing to camp overnight, on a sidewalk to cast a vote for thestar candidate of their choice.
With that in mind we would like to announce Dr. Dawg for president. Beta version, only.
This is the rough draft, and will be polished, as soon as we have a little more coffee, and receive a few more large donations, from wealthy, helpful donors. Or, just feel like cleaning it up a bit. Stay tuned for further improvements.

Voting the ultimate charity.
We, here at Life Explained (#lifeexplained) have decided to move forward with a new fund raising strategy. It is almost fool proof, it is almost perfect. Plus, it is so simple that almost anybody can do it. That's right, we are going to run for president.
Well, not all of us are going to run for president, not that all of us shouldn't run for president, don't get us wrong, all of us would make a wonderful president, you should be so lucky to have us all for president, being president would be easy for us after the things we have been through, why the stories we could tell you... Anyway, we are going to pick one of us, and he, or she, is going to run for president.
Thorough research has indicated that campaigning for president maybe the most lucrative profession in the country. And you don't even have to win, people will hire you to give speeches, and advocate on their behalf, and there are book rights, and made for television movies, and... it is just a good idea.
First, there are the fundraiser dinners. People pay thousands of dollars to have a meal with us. And we don't even have to cook, serve or clean up. Where else are you going to find a sweetheart deal like that? We have trouble getting somebody's mom to fix up a plate of cookies and drop them off once in a while. And, then we have to wash the plate, and take it back. And, if we ask for a few dollars for gas, maybe a cup of coffee for the trip back to work they ask like we are asking if we can move back home. Which would not be so bad, we could help out with the yard work, and maybe pitch in for the groceries. They could do a lot worse than us for a room mate, we can tell you that, we bring a lot to the table, we have a job, and our own microwave, and... Anyway, there is a lot of money to be made in dinners like that.
Second, there is that cool bus, traveling across the country, shaking hands, meeting people. Sitting down, breaking bread with the common people, the salt of the Earth, the good folk of this fine country. Discussing the issues, exploring their priorities, learning what they feel is wrong and needs to be fixed in the nations capitol, and then ignoring it completely. But, a lot of those little diners have excellent pie or cobbler, fresh, dairy churned ice cream, and big steaming mugs of hot, delicious coffee. And, we are pretty sure someone else picks up the tab. Man, the people of this country have it made, really, what are they whining about, we are the ones stuck in that stupid tour bus, with all of those boring charts, and displays, and the constant, endless whining sound of unemployment, budget, foreign policy, reach across the aisle, you know what, let the people put down their coffee mug, and spoon full of ice cream and cobbler, and deal with that stuff, that is what we think should... Well, we are off to Dubuque, we hear The Golden Hen has a fantastic omelet.
Third, there will be people lining up to hand us suitcases full of money. How many times in your life have you been in a position to accept bags of cash from fantastically wealthy people? We don't really care, that was not really a question it was more of a declarative, yes we realize it was phrased as an interrogative, but trust us, we can tell by looking at you nobody ever handed you a sack of cash. It was an example of using rhetoric to emphasize the validity of an argument. We used a phrase that would invoke a strong visual reaction to make a point. What was the point? Well... what was the point? Oh, yeah. There is a lot of money being handed to candidates today, and according to the candidates, and donors, it is not to influence policy, or buy elections, it is just to... it is only for... we don't know why they go around handing out serious piles of coin like that, and we don't care, we would just like to get out hands on some
Remember, it is your government, and it only works if you all vote, and donate, so get out and vote, and donate. We take cash, checks and all major credit cards, jewelry, electronics, and motor vehicles. Can our opponents say that?

We are here for you, when you need us most.
With the accelerating pace of technological innovation our world is constantly, and rapidly shrinking, becoming more compact, and compressed. Journeys that used to take months now last hours, and the isolated sense of security is now a remnant of a distant memory. We find ourselves in a time where headlines from across the world are a constant reminder our sense of insulated, secluded existence is nothing more than an illusion.
Fortunately, I am willing to volunteer. The first step needs to be some sort of token, mutual sacrifice. With that in mind, everybody in the world should send me one dollar, or drachma, or ruble, or euro, or whatever. If you can't afford to send a whole (insert monetary unit of choice) then a small portion will be suitable. It is the shared sense of giving, of working toward a common cause that is important, even vital to our continued existence.
Journeys that used to take months now are over in hours. It has in many ways become a "global village." We need to take that next step and become "the family of man." We need to break down the barriers of intolerance, and dogmatic superiority, and welcome each other, with warmth, and friendship.
During my recent bout of historical inquiry I have noticed a few recurring themes, one of which is the introduction of radical variables into any unstable equation involving armed states normally leads to war, destruction, and radical change. And this may be one of those times, it is hard to say, but who wants to roll those dice?
What the world needs is someone who is willing to take the lead, be the bigger man, and begin the long, painful, trying process of world unification. Someone who only wants to help, and is not seeking grandeur, or fame, and is only thinking of others, someone who only wants to usher in a new era of understanding and mutual prosperity.
Fortunately, I am willing to volunteer. The first step needs to be some sort of token, mutual sacrifice. With that in mind, everybody in the world should send me one dollar, or drachma, or ruble, or euro, or whatever. It is the shared sense of giving, of working toward a common cause that is important, even vital to our continued existence.
I will use this money for the "Life Explained Worldwide Harmonious Understanding and Peace Initiative," and maybe dinner and a few drinks, this is difficult, thirsty work after all. But, taking the long view it is imperative we learn to work together, there is too much at stake.
So, please, give generously to this noble cause, you will feel better about yourself.
